As our pressure irrigation season ends on October 15, it’s time to put your sprinkler system to bed for the winter.
Why is winterizing necessary? In a climate like ours where the frost line extends deeper than most sprinkler pipes, any water left in the system can freeze in the pipes, causing them to crack and creating leaks – and possibly flooding – in the spring.
To avoid this, shut off the sprinkler water supply at the stop and waste and drain any water from the system.
If you have a backflow device, please make sure it is winterized or else removed and placed inside to avoid freezing.
To learn more, consult a landscaper or type “winterize sprinkler system” into a search engine.
