Is discolored tap water safe to drink?

Every spring, we receive questions, comments, and complaints from customers when their tap water develops a slight discolored tinge.

This discoloration is a normal part of the runoff process. The water is safe to drink and to use for washing clothes and dishes.

During the spring runoff, as the water flows over leaves and twigs it can develop some discoloration, similar to what happens when you put tea leaves into water. This discoloration can persist even after water is treated in our treatment plant.

Don’t worry, the discoloration will go away as the snow melt lessens in the summer.
